Instructions for Presenters

The Gerontological Society of America welcomes your participation in the 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting. The program reaches across all of GSA's professional sections and embraces the interdisciplinary nature of its membership. Sessions and events will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.


All meeting participants are required to register in order to attend the Annual Scientific Meeting. Registration will open July 31, 2020. Register by September 3, 2020 to receive the special "Early Bird" rate. 

Published Program

The Program Schedule will include a list of program activities including scientific sessions and social events. The abstracts will be published as special issue of Innovation in Aging, under the title of Program Abstracts. The Abstract Book will be available electronically only. The Program Book will include a list of program activities including scientific sessions and social events. Meeting attendees will receive a hard-copy of the Program Book onsite at registration. For those individuals who elect to receive $10 off their registration and forgo a printed copy, an electronic version of the Program Book and the Mobile App will be available in advance of the meeting.

Presentation Formats

The program includes poster, paper, and symposia presentation types. All presenters are encouraged to review GSA's Instructions for Participants for requirements and helpful guidelines, available in June. 

Poster Sessions

The poster session are a 2 hour display presentation with a special face-to-face time. Your Poster should be on display for the duration of the session time listed in your notification e-mail. As the presenter, you are only asked to attend your board for the hour face-to-face time. The space will be shared with the exhibit hall to elevate the posters' visibility and the value of the scientific value they contain.

Wednesday, November 4
6 to 8 p.m. (face-to-face time is 6 to 7 p.m.)

Thursday, November 5
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (face-to-face time is 2 to 3 p.m.)

Friday, November 6
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (face-to-face time is 2 to 3 p.m.)

Saturday, November 7
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (face-to-face time is 2 to 3 p.m.)

Poster sessions will take place in Exhibit Hall B at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. There are four exclusive timeslots dedicated to posters. Set-up times for poster sessions are 30 minutes prior to your poster session. All poster presenters are responsible for the removal of their materials from boards by the end of their presentation time. Any posters remaining will be removed. All displaced posters must be claimed by 3:30 pm on Saturday or they will be disposed of. GSA is not responsible for storing or the care and condition of removed posters.

Paper Sessions

Paper sessions last 90 minutes and are comprised of between 4 and 6 oral presentations grouped around a common theme or topic. When there are 4 presentations in a session, individual presentations should be no more than 18 minutes (about 14 minutes for presentation and 4 minutes for questions and discussion). With fewer or more presentations in a session, adjust these times accordingly. It is important that presenters stay within their allotted time. Each paper session will have a Session Chair to assist with timekeeping and to facilitate discussion among presenters and audience participants.


Symposia are scheduled in 90-minute sessions and are comprised of several presentations around a topic organized by a Chair. A discussant is on hand to facilitate discussion between presenters and the audience. Chairs and/or organizers of symposia are responsible for making sure sessions begin and end on time.

Audio-Visual Equipment

For every symposium and paper session, GSA will provide the equipment listed below. Individuals who wish to use additional equipment must arrange for it at their own expense. Should problems arise with audio-visual equipment during your presentation, volunteers or GSA staff members found at the Registration desk can assist.

  • One (1) LCD projector
  • One (1) screen
  • One (1) electric pointer
  • One (1) podium microphone
  • One PC laptop (speakers are required to use the laptop in the meeting room)

GSA does not provide WiFi for paper or symposia sessions.
